INTENSE FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

Modern karate was taken from Okinawa to Japan in the early 20th century, where it was transformed from rough all-in fighting into the different ‘styles’ and formats we know today. Karate was introduced to Great Britain over 60 years ago. This coincided with a decline in our indigenous boxing and wrestling, so karate soon became extremely popular.

Charnwood Karate was established in Loughborough in 1980. We practised the Kyokushin style until 1999 then the Enshin style from 2000 to 2011. Both use full-contact competition rules requiring high levels of skill, fitness and fighting spirit.

I've benefitted from some great training over the years in both traditional and modern systems. As a competitor I fought and won at international level and as a club we have trained Scottish, British and European champions and a ‘Spirit Award’ winner at a World Championships.

We offer the spirit and challenge of combat sport and intense fitness training. We realise that trying anything new can be daunting, but we will be there to motivate and encourage you throughout your membership. There can be no guarantees, but if you are prepared to try we have the coaching experience to help you to improve.

Training is as safe as possible, but it is demanding and you will be expected to give your best. There is no quick fix here. To be good at any combat sport takes dedicated practice, self-discipline and hard training. As far as we know there are no shortcuts, so please don't join if you're looking for an easy way to get awesome.
